Madrid is a very important and multicultural city. It is in the middle of Spain and is a big city with lots of things to do, and where doesn´t matter where you come from because anyone who stays in Madrid becomes part of it.

How to arrive to Madrid?

The city has only one airport, Barajas, the one is connected by metro, train and buses with the city center in a few minutes.

There are also several train stations (Atocha is the main one) and bus stations (Principe Pio, Moncloa and Mendez Alvaro are the most important ones if you want to travel by bus around our nice country).

What to do in Madrid?

Madrid is an important center of culture, nightlife, business and shopping.

Madrid is a city where there is always happening something, is a city used to big events as concerts, the Rock in Rio Madrid, Gay Proud, JMJ, football matches, festivals, and local festivities for example. As you may know, we are also applying for being the organizers of the Olympic Games in 2020 and they want to build the Eurovegas in Madrid.

If you want art then you must visit the Prado Museum, Reina Sofia Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. If you want history you can just walk around the city center (Puerta del sol, Palacio Real, Lavapies, Huertas, Santa Ana square…) but you can also visit some other towns which are close to Madrid and are very nice to like El Escorial, Aranjuez, Alcalá de Henares, Segovia or Toledo.

You can also practice any sport you want, there are a lot of gyms in Madrid, the public ones are good as well (www.munimadrid.es); you can also practice some sports in any of the public parks(Retiro, Casa de Campo, Madrid Rio) or even going skiing to Xanadu or  to Navacerrada-Valdesquí if there is enough snow in winter.

And at lunch time, what can you eat? My answer is, what cannot you eat in Madrid? You can enjoy in a lot of restaurants our Mediterranean dishes, tapas are very usual, and you can find some cool places in “El Mercado de San Miguel”, in Huertas or “El Mercado de San Antón”, there are also some known big restaurants as “100 montaditos” or “La sureña” where you can drink some beers and eat something for a few Euros. For students there are also some typical places as “La casa de la tortilla” near Moncloa station or “El tigre” which is in Hortaleza Street, near the Gran Via.

And what about nightlife in Madrid? I could talk for hours about it, but being brief it depends on your likes you can just go to Alonso Martinez station, Moncloa station, Santiago Bernabeu station, Chueca station or Huertas on Friday night and you will find plenty of bars and discos to choose. Just say, in Madrid one drink in a disco is about 8 or 10 Euros, so usually we make “botellón” (drinking in thr street what is forbidden or at someone´s house) before going to a club.

Some other usefully information:

Opening hours

Madrid is famous for being a city where, always, is something to do. And this is true but, as in anywhere, there are some timetables that you should know.

The Community of Madrid has wide opening hours. On the one hand, the shopping centers and mode shops open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (this can change from one establishment to others). On the other hand, the small shops use to open their doors at 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. After a break to have lunch, they restart their activity at 5 p.m. until 8.30 p.m.

To have lunch in Madrid, you should go to the restaurants between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and to have dinner between 8.30 p.m. and midnight or, sometimes, until 1 a.m. The cafés and bars open their doors between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. or, in some cases, 1 a.m. It depends on the establishment.

To go out in Madrid is very easy. You have a lot of possibilities. On the one hand, you can visit the nightclubs open until 3 a.m. or 3.30 a.m. On the other hand, you find the discotheques open during the whole night until 6.30 a.m. or 7 a.m.

Madrid can be proud of its public transport. The buses, the underground and the trains cover Madrid. The buses work between 6 a.m. and midnight, while the underground continue half and an hour more, until 1.30 a.m. The trains start at 5 a.m. and keep working until midnight. Moreover, during the night there is a bus service which covers the same routes as the underground from midnight until 6 a.m.
