Athens, the capital of sunny Greece. Noisy and chaotic on the outside, full of ancient wonders and monuments on the inside. A combination of mythology and history, the birthplace of democracy. Spring and autumn are the best periods to visit, when the weather is not so hot. If you can stand the heat, it’s much easier to move around in summer, while most people rest on some island or at other summer resort for the holiday time.
So what’s the most popular sight in Athens? The Acropolis of course. Built on high rock with a lot of religious and historical monuments. A lovely place to visit and excellent place to take photos with a wonderful view in the background. I think that up there it was much easier for the ancient Greeks to build a civilization!
And which is the most central square of the whole country? It’s Syntagma square! The parliament is located there and of course a lot of shops and cafés on Ermou street. The parliament is surrounded by the National gardens, a very nice place for a walk. What’s more you can feed the birds there! Every hour in front of the parliament there is the changing of the guard ceremony performed by the Presidential Guards(in Greek their name is tsolias!). Take a photo beside them (they stand still while performing), but don’t touch them!
I think nightlife is a bit more interesting so let’s talk about it… Gkazi district is the best! Always full of people and there are all kinds of clubs and bars to visit. There is a metro station in case you are tired after all the sightseeing through the day and you don’t want to walk! Kolonaki area is also very good but there you will have to pay a bit more..Choose Exarchia area if you want to see something more alternative.
So next comes the sea! Why not drink a coffee or have something to eat by the sea and at the same time enjoy the sun and the water? I think that the best places are: Mikrolimano and Glyfada. You can easily spend there all evening as they are both full of cafés and restaurants offering fish or sea food. A very good idea is also a daily trip (by hydrofoil not more than half an hour) to lovely islands Aegina and Salamina.
You don’t like the sea? Impossible I think, but you can go to the mountain instead! It is called Parnytha and its highest spot is 1413 meters. In winter, it’s covered with snow. It’s a very nice place for a picnic. If you are lucky, you might see the deer that live in the forest. You can go up by car, bus or cable car which brings you directly to the casino located on the mountain!
And the best is for the end. Try Greek souvlaki and tzatziki! You will love them both! Easy to find everywhere in the city – just follow the smell!
So, don’t hesitate and visit Athens! Remember that prices have decreased so much over the last years, so, that’s another reason for you to come here!
I would love to answer any questions you may have!
