Rijeka is a port town situated in north Adriatic at the western part of Croatia. Despite its relatively small population (cca 130 000 people) Rijeka is a city with a  large number of student (over 20 000). The newly built campus (though not finished yet) houses several colleges, student service, technological park and the student cantine. Other colleges are placed through the city, with the exceptio of „Touristic management“ that is in the nearby place of Ika. One special part of student life is the student Xcard (popularly called „x-ica“ [read „iksica“]) which enables you to eat in student cantines with a 70% discount.

During the winter most of student night life is concentrated in the city center and a few places in the outskirts. There are several events like concerts, carnival ( „Riječki karneval“ third largest in the world) and fairs that are  traditionally organised.

The best time to be there is during summer smester. As it is by the sea, the warm weather makes it very tempting to go swimming. Also a number of places around Rijeka come to life and host their own parties, fisherman evenings and events. Here you can try tipical local dishes and drinks.  And in June a sailboat race (regata) called „Fiumanka“ takes place.

There’s also a „Night of Bakar” in town near Rijeka. It is a festivity and they make a simulated battle between boats and land with explosives and fireworks.

Prices are slightly higher for food in Croatia, but lower on rent. So it equals out for the most part. One of the tipical foods we eat is burek (meat or cheese pie made with flaky filo dough) and it is our equivalent of your zapiekanka.

Rijeka is not a highly touristic city, one larger point of interest is the „Trsat fort“ and church with monastery. Other things are less monumental, but the sorrounding towns have ample of interesting sites. Also in the mountains behind Rijeka, we have a small ski resort just 45 minutes ride from the sea, national park Risnjak and many other points of interest. Don’t leave without seeing Istria, one of the most attractive parts of Croatia right next to Rijeka.
